Stolen from Kassie!

Comment here with prompt(s), character(s) for it/them, and you get a ficlet.

Pretty much anyone I've played is fine, whether from open games or PSLs, or characters I've talked about playing but never got around to. I actually intend to try to finish them this time. >_>

eenie meanie miney moe, catch a drifter by the toe

People ascribe personalities to places. Genius loci, in the old times: the spirit of places. It used to mean the protective spirit, a literal spirit; these days, it is used more to describe the feel of a place.

People don't expect the places to which they ascribe personality to actually have one.

if he fights, don't let him go; more fodder for the breeding

It-they-we sits, now in the northwest, now in the rolling hills, now in the burnt, brown plains, silent. Silent and malevolent, a genius locus gone horribly wrong, the spirit of the place corrupted and twisted and turned mad. It-they-we sends out tendrils, fog drifting, now through corn crops, now through rain-lush grass, now through spiky spinifex, and it-they-we draws them in.

eenie meanie miney moe, bring them in, don't let them go

Fog drifts, heavy and silent, dulling sound and sight, like the breath of the place. Here and there the players, pawns moving through an unseen chessboard, the fog hiding the monsters just a step away.

It-they-we is hungry.

the more they hide, the more we know

Some resist. Some fight. But it-they-we is patient. They will all come to the same place, in the end. It-they-we does not mind biding its time.

the world will end in bleeding

Carlton misses Alaska every day. He misses the smell of ice that's never quite the same away from his cabin, he misses the small, warm dark place that he made himself, far from what people term civilisation. He misses not caring about what people think, he misses not seeing people for weeks on end outside of his sporadic supply runs. He misses seeing moose in the yard, the occasional wolverine, the skittish deer.

People, hearing Carlton talk about Alaska -- when they hear him talk at all -- assume that he sees his cabin as home, that he's not comfortable enough in Michigan to call it home.

They're right on one count; Michigan isn't Carlton's home, any more than New York was his home. But he doesn't consider Alaska home, either. Home is where you feel safe, where you feel happy, and Carlton might have been physically safe in Alaska, but he was never safe emotionally, and he was rarely happy. He's existed in a sort of holding pattern for ten years, and the hurt is still as raw as it was when he was seventeen. No, Alaska is not his home, either.

It's odd, though; if home is where you feel safe and happy, he's beginning to feel as though home is anywhere that includes Jordan.

Sturgis: Honour
[info]musify

Lions were held up as symbols of courage and honour, because the Muggle royals decided that they looked majestic and that they were a better royal animal than, say, a weasel or a sunbear, and proceeded to co-opt them without actually checking to see if the assumptions they made were anything close to real. Sturgis, whose childhood in the more remote areas of Wales meant that he spent a lot of wet days in his mother's library, actually knew what lions were like, and was quietly amused when he got to Hogwarts and found out what Gryffindor's symbolic animal was.

(Then again, Sturgis always held that eagles weren't grand and noble and intelligent, they were fucking predators who didn't see anything wrong with eating each other if they really wanted to, and for that matter they were birds and okay, probably intelligent by bird standards but that didn't mean they could write their own names, for Christ's sake, and that snakes weren't actually bad at all, they just got a bad rap because some people didn't like the feel of scales and didn't like the fact that some snakes were venomous but hey, it's kind of hard for an animal to be evil because you need moral recognition to be evil and animals don't have that, and that badgers were ornery fucking bastards when they wanted to be.)

When Sturgis first began studying to become an Animagus, to better protect his fragile little sister, he had some vague idea that his Animagus form might be some sort of dog, a terrier maybe, because he did have a habit of latching onto things and worrying at them until they were dead, even if he much preferred to spend his time lazing about with Ted and Andie and Caradoc. One of his girlfriends at Hogwarts, admittedly a Slytherin but a decent sort of girl as far as Sturgis was concerned, broke up with him because, as she said, "you've just got no ambition, Sturgis", and he supposed that was true. But there were more important things than ambition, as far as he was concerned, and while there was a certain indolentness to his nature, he wasn't averse to hard work. Becoming an Animagus certainly wasn't easy.

Somewhere along the way, he and Caradoc finished school and moved into a flat together, Sturgis with rather phenomenally unremarkable marks and a respectable-ish job as a bartender, and Caradoc with his usual erratic brilliantness and a penchant for doing science in their living room. Sturgis kept studying how to become an Animagus, still rather convinced that he'd be some sort of terrier, and the first time he made the transformation, he got... somewhat of a surprise.

Lions, in actuality, are not bastions of strength and nobility and courage, but rather, opportunistic bastards who laze around because they have too much of a heat-well around their heads for it to be safe for them to do much physical activity. The female of the species, certainly, but the males rather followed Sturgis's favoured lifestyle: laze about, eat things, have sex, have occasional spurts of activity followed by more lazing about. So perhaps it made sense for him to be a lion, for all he found himself apologising to Caradoc about it one night when they were drunk and he was insistently describing lions as "lazy opportunistic fuckers, emphasis on fucker, so I don't get why it's Gryffindor's animal but I'm sorry if I'm fucking up your House's big mythic whatsit".

Caradoc just laughed with him -- with, not at, an important distinction -- and proceeded, every time Sturgis decided to take a nap in his Animagus form because there was something just relaxing about sleeping as a cat, even a great big fuck-off cat, to braid pink ribbons into his mane.

So, okay, maybe he wasn't this big, noble creature that represented honour or some bullshit. But the Order did important work, and he and Caradoc had... well, whatever it was that they had, it was nice, so being a big, not-that-noble creature that represented Doing Good Things For Good People was just fine by him.

(Honour never got anyone laid, anyway.)
